default
Posted on Sat, 17 May 2014
Question: Hello, I am a 64 year old woman who has had on and off pain in colon, constipation at times with cramps, my ears sometimes feel stopped up when this happens, my Dr. thinks its IBS and I am on celexa 20.mg which seems to help..it just hits me..with no warning...I had a colonoscopy 3 years ago and he said I had a polyp and diverticulosis ..and looked like an ulcer had healed over..that's all...he said come back in 8 years..when I get this my legs will ache really bad and I am afraid to eat anything for fear of making it worse. i also take bentyl when it happens. Spicy food or alcohol(wine or beer) seem to trigger it. I have read its a nervous problem rather than a food problem..
I don't know what to do ,

Brief Answer:
Causes for constipation...

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I have gone through your medical history and feel sorry for the situation you are in.

You are reporting to have:
- thyroiditis (currently on levothyroxin)
- high cholesterol (taking Lipitor)
- a past colonoscopy reported a polyp, diverticulosis and healed ulcer.

If such problems were reported in the colonoscopy, I usually advise my patients to do annual check ups to ensure that they are fine.

A polyp can be ulcerated or increase in size; the diverticulosis can cause bowel strangulation. So, I usually ensure these complications won't happen before stating IBS as a diagnosis.

Constipation is a sign of something going wrong inside your bowels. Further examinations are needed to confirm the right diagnosis:
- another colonoscopy
- abdominal ultrasound
- routine stool analysis
- urine analysis
- entire blood work

Another cause for constipation in your case is also related to thyroid problems. Usually, thyroid problems are associated with constipation too.

Taking all these data into account, further analysis should be conducted to determine the right problem. You can discuss it further with your gastroenterologist.

If everything is ok, then, IBS will be confirmed. Can continue taking Celexa as it is showing effective to you.

Hope it answered to your queries! Let me know if you need further assistance!
