What Cause Sudden Weight Gain After Losing Weight?

default
Posted on Sat, 25 Jul 2015
Question: I have been on Nutrisystems for weight loss since April 28, 2014. The first six months I lost about 78 pounds. The next seven months I only lost about 24 pounds. However, just the past couple of weeks I have suddenly gained 10 pounds, and I am not doing anything different than I have been doing for the past 12-14 months. The last two weeks my uppper legs - thighs have become half again as big as they were. In addition, my stomach is getting larger as well. I have no swelling in my lower legs or ankles or discomfort. What can cause this?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to synthroid dose reduction.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
The reduction in synthroid dose is likely to be a contributing factor to your weight gain. Thyroid hormones increase your metabolism and burn your calories.
Could you let me know why the Synthroid dose was reduced and what your TFT before the dose reduction was. If you have not done TSH after the dose reduction, do one and I shall be happy to interpret the result for you.

I got sick and was at the high end of the range when they tested my tft factor. My doctor said my symptoms were indicative of an over active thyroid, so I alternated between 100 and 88 mg for six months. I ran out of the 100 mg and still had some 88 mg. I am waiting on the mail order pharmacy to fill the 100 mg prescription. I just sent it in yesterday.

I am not sure, but if I remember correctly, my tft before the reduction was around 1.5.

Brief Answer:
TSH is normal

Detailed Answer:
TSH of 1.5 is normal.
If you are an anxious person and react to stress in an adverse way, the symptoms can be very similar to an over active thyroid.
Practise stress relieving measures like yoga, meditation and relaxation techniques.
You should also exercise a minimum of 30 minutes per day.
These measures along with a 100ug dose of Synthroid would help you lose some of the weight you regained. Also it is important to maintain a positive attitude as well as avoid snacking to relieve stress.

Yes. I have had severe personal stress in my life the last two weeks. I do exercise. I was walking 4-5 miles a day until recently. The last month I have cut down to two and three miles a day due to the heat. But, I never cheat on my diet.
If I get rid of the stress in my life or control it with your suggestions above, will the swelling in my legs and stomach go back down?

Brief Answer:
These would go down with weight reduction

Detailed Answer:
I am travelling and do not have internet access often. Thank you for your patience.
The leg swelling and the stomach are related to the weight gain.
The 100ug dose of Synthroid along with exercise and stress control would reduce your weight and help in you losing the swellings.
