Question: Hi,
I've had this brown vertical stripe on my right ring finger since about age 30. I'm currently 38. The nail is brittle at times.

I understand your concern. It's likely to be melanonychia, the longitudinal type. This is a deposition of pigment cells on the nail bed. Most often it is harmless and there is nothing that should be done.

However, in a few cases, it can turn into melanoma (a malignancy of the pigment cells of the skin), so I'd recommend you have it checked by a dermatologist for peace of mind.
