What Causes A Deep And Painful Cough While Recovering Form Bronchitis?

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: I had had bronchitis about two weeks ago (better now), with a deep hard cough, almost constant hard coughing, and developed soreness and pain at the upper left side of my ribcage (can fit my entire hand, play down, just under the breast, as to where the pain is located). The muscle feels tender, almost bruised and especially hurts when I go to sleep, it gets stiff and it is difficult to get out of bed. The last two days, the pain got worse, when I went to bed the muscle spasm intensely - took a muscle relaxer (left over medication from an old back injury) to stop the spasm. For the last two days, took muscle relaxer at night, and Mortin during the day. Also, taped the side/muscle, it hurts to cough, or stretch, especially if stretching to reach above my head, hurts slightly when I walk or sit and have begun to sleep on my back. I think I may have a sprain but my husband thinks it is a muscle spasm., I am not sure the muscle relaxer at night is helping. I want to make sure I take care of myself correctly so I get better soon, have much to do. Have been carrying things, but lighter weight. The first two weeks, having had the muscle pain, thought it was because of my cough, so just thought it would go away soon, but the last two days the pain is worse, which is confusing - the only thing I can figure is maybe because I was not taking care of the muscle pain the first two weeks and then it got worse. Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
First get done chest x ray.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description, possibility of musculoskeletal pain is more in your case.
But better to get done chest x ray first to rule out lung infection.
Bronchitis can complicate by pneumonia (lung infection) and pneumonia can cause similar kind of chest pain.
So better to first get done chest x ray.
If chest x ray is normal then no need to worry much.
You are mostly having musculoskeletal pain.
Try to follow these steps for better symptomatic relief.
1. Avoid heavyweight lifting and strenuous exercise.
2. Avoid movements causing pain.
3. Avoid bad postures in sleep.
4. Start painkiller and muscle relaxant.
5. Apply warm water pad on affected site.
You will mostly improve in 1 week by all these.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.
