What Causes A Difference In Kidney Sizes As Per The Report?

Thanks for the reply on my last question.
I have one more.
I got 2 ultrasounds done. One on 12.10.2014 and second on 1.03.2015.
Both the reports are with in normal limits.
In my 12.10.2014 report : My right kidney size is mentioned 98X40 MM and Left kidney is 95X39 MM.
In my 1.02.2015 report : My right kidney size mentioned is 103X40 MM and Left kidney size is 100X50 MM.
Both are done from the same center.
I want to know if this much variation in the size is normal?
Thanks for your help.
It is acceptable to have difference of a few mm when measuring kidneys
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
The normal kidney measurement in XXXXXXX population is between 80 mm to 120 mm in length. Less than 80 mm is called a small kidney in adults. A size more than 120 mm in length is a larger kidney. Also the difference in length between two kidneys in the same patient should not be more than 20 mm. The kidney is an organ that is best measured with breath on hold when doing ultrasound scan.
In your ultra sound report,
(i) Right kidney was measured 98 x 40 mm on 12-10-2014 and 103 x 40 mm on 01-02-2015
In the case of right kidney measurements we find a difference of 5 mm in length. This is due to measuring at different phase of breathing and this much difference is acceptable and considered normal.
(ii) Left kidney was measured 95 x 39 mm on 12-10-2014 and 100 x 50 mm on 01-02-2015
In the case of left kidney measurements we find difference of 5 mm in length and 11 mm in width. This is again due to taking measurement at a different phase of breathing. The difference in width is probably due to measuring at a different place, the width is maximum at the center of the kidney and decreases toward the ends or poles. Sometimes the left kidney has a lot of gas in the bowel around it and that is why the differences in measurement of left kidney is slightly more.
I confirm that the above measurements are within normal limits. To double confirm that your kidneys are working normally, it is better if you can get serum creatinine and blood urea level test done which are simple kidney function tests done with a small amount of blood sample and routine urine test.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
