Posted on Wed, 22 Feb 2017
Question: I am a diabetic since 4 years. I am 58 male. Doctors advised me to take glycomet 850 sr twice a day. During the evening time my glucose levels are becoming down. Fasting and pp are within the limits. Im a preacher, some times during preaching time also levels are going down. Every doctor is telling that metforminn doesn't allow sugar levels down. Even endocrinologist tried this case, but no result. Now i am using 500sr twice a day. Today morning fasting was 144. Pp and 232. Pls tell me how to manage it ? Shall i discontinue taking rice during nights ?

Sir, while using 850 mg sugar levels fasting is inbetween 115 to 125. Pp levels are 140 to 180. I am taking 850 dose since 3 years. In the middle they changed it to 500 twice daily. Then tne levels are fasting 130 and 190. Again they recommended 850. Main problem is lowering sugar levels when i got more strain. Two days i tried 850 single dose and went to doctor then levels are 110 and 160. Whethef sustained elease is better anr metformin plain is better ? Pls clarify.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
By that record, it seems that the sugars were well controlled with 850mg dose, and definitely rises with 500 mg dose.
I would suggest switching to 850-500 mg dose after discussing with your treating diabetician.
This may help control your symptoms while maintaining your PP sugars.
HAve you tested HbA1C recently? Test it if not done so. It will guide us further.
Also test your kidney function tests.
Best of luck, Dr Mittal
