What Causes A Lump Blocking The Cervix?

default
Posted on Fri, 23 May 2014
Question: Hi, I am a 48 year old female and perimenopausal. Last week I had my smear test but the nurse could not perform it due to my cervix being blocked with a lump. I am booked in to see my GP next week. Is this likely to be a nabothian cyst? My last period was 3rd March and I feel premenstrual now but if the opening of my cervix is blocked how can there possibly be a blood flow, does it just collect in the uterus? I am of course very concerned that it could be cervical cancer but my symptoms have been perimenopausal namely missed periods, fatigue and night sweats. Thank you for your help. Mrs XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
nabothian cyst most likely if menses are normal

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs XXXXX, thanks for trusting health care magic.
In my opinion probably that lump is a nabothian cyst only but looking at your age there can be several other possibilities too, so I would like to ask some questions-
1) menstrual flow
2) any bleeding in between menses
3) bleeding after intercourse
4) smear was a routine screening or indicated for some reason?
In case you have normal menstrual pattern and it was just a routine screening then in my opinion there is nothing much to be worried and you can visit your doctor as scheduled
Take care and wish you all the best.

Thank you Dr XXXXXXX XXXXXXX for yor reply.

In response to your questions:

When I do have a period (every 2-3 months), the flow is normal for me which is heavy for first 3 days and lasts for 6-7.

I do not have any bleeding between periods.

I do not have bleeding after intercourse which is not very often these days!

The attempted smear was a routine one.

I will keep you posted and hopefully it is a nabothian cyst and thank you again. I was thinking it must be fascinating dealing with patients over the globe.
