What Causes A Mole With A White Ring On The Back?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, I noticed that my son has a mole on his back that now has a ring of lighter skin around it. My brother has also had a few of these types of moles and they have been benign. I am wondering if this is a halo mole- can they appear suddenly? I check the moles on his back quite regularly and have not noticed the white ring before on this mole- also I'm wondering if it is more noticeable because he is a little bit XXXXXXX from the summer. Can you please provide your thoughts? I did make an apt for him for next week.

Brief Answer:
Mole should be removed and tested.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Any mole change including size change, color change, shape change, halo appearance, itchiness makes the mole suspicious. Such mole should be removed and tested.
This does not meant its a melanoma. Most of such moles are benign. However some of them can be malignant.

That is why he should consult dermatologist. The mole should be removed and tested.

Sun bathing is a risk factor of melanoma development. So you can not assume this is more noticeable due to tan.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
