Brief Answer:
Usually a boil/abscess.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Female/49 - hard knot inside left buttock - burst open yesterday - very painful - using povidone gauze to clean and antibacterial on gauze to keep on the area and change every hour..

The commonest cause of such a swelling is usually an abscess/boil.
Rarely it may be connected to the anus/rectum and will be called a fistula. But this can be diagnosed only on strong suspicion by a General Surgeon or if it recurs.

You care carrying on a correct treatment.
But I think an additional antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication can help better, early and complete recovery.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
