What Causes A Painful Lump On The Lower Back After A Fall?

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Apr 2017
Question: I fell 10 days ago on carpeted steps and got a huge bruise from waist to top of thighs, on backside, worse on left side.
Still badly bruised but have painful lump about 8 inches by 5 inches that just feels tight and hard.
Can't sit except on pillow. Was using heating pad. Any recommendations?

Brief Answer:
continue heat pad, anti inflammatory medication, muscle relaxant

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You continue the use of the heating pad, using it 2 to 3 times daily for 15 to 20mins.

In addition to this, the use of anti inflammatory medications such as naproxen, ibuprofen, cataflam, if you allowed to use them, would help a lot.
If you are using any medications such as warfarin, xarelto , plavix etc, you should not use these meds.

If you can use them, it should be done after getting something to eat or drink to coat the stomach lining.
One of these can be taken consistently for 3 to 5 days, in some cases longer courses may be needed.

The lump is due to the trauma and occurs as part of the body's inflammatory response.
It would decrease in time (can take 2 to 3 weeks in some cases) though scar tissue may replace it and form a harder, smaller lump.

Some of the pain may be due to spasm of the muscles around the injured area. This may respond to a muscle relaxant though this would require a prescription from your doctor.
Eg of muscle relxants include cyclobenzaprine, valium, baclofen, tizanidine, methocarbamol

Other aspects of treatment would involve simply rest, elevation on pillows or what maybe comfortable

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
