What Causes A Small Swollen Bump On Neck?

Question: My son, who is 28, got a small bump on his neck at least a week ago. It has swollen to about the size of a quarter and become sore when touched or his shirt, for example, rubs against it. He works in maintenance in a restaurant, and I'm wondering if it could be something like an insect bite allergy and if there's a topical ointment he could try. Thank you for your help.

Noted the history of a small bump on the neck of your 28 year old son about a week ago. It is about a size of a quarter and is sore when toughed by his shirt.
