Management of diarrhea after colectomy
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic
Diarrhea is a common problem after colon removal(full/partial). This is because colon is where reabsorption of water takes place. When whole/part of colon is removed, the water content in feces increases leading to diarrhea.
Diet with bland foods, such as bread, rice, toast should be tried
Food high in sugar content, sauces and spicy foods should be avoided. Avoid food high in fat and diary products.
Fluid, lost with diarrhea should be replaced.Drink sports drinks like Gatorade.
Loperamide can postpone diarrhea for several hours. But this is not ideal for long term use.
If these measures fail, Lanreotide injection is used for managing the diarrhea.
