default
Posted on Thu, 2 Nov 2017
Question: Dear Sir, I always feel acidic formation before and after food. It's more uncomfortable during sleep. Sometime i wake up during midnight due to acid formation.

Also i realised that if i take any tab for gas (like pentosec) before my breakfast the problem is somewhat gone. Please suggest and let me know if more information is required.

Thanks,
xxxxxxxx

Brief Answer:
gastroesophageal reflux disease

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible, based on the symptoms mentioned, that you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), commonly just called reflux

This causes burning/acid feeling which tends to be worse in the night or early morning.

Some persons may also have bloating, nausea, regurgitation of food/food feels as though it is coming back up, acid taste in the mouth, excess saliva, persistent coughing.

It can be treated with both lifestyle changes and medication.

The lifestyle changes include the following---(1) stopping acidic/citrus/spicy/fried foods because these tend to worsen it

This includes reducing caffeine products (coffee , coke, reducing chocolate if this worsens it), mint, tomato, all citrus fruits

(2)using small frequent meals instead of large meals. Less acid is made in the stomach with smaller meals

(3)wait 2 hours after eating before laying down

(4)prop up the head of the bed if it is very bad

(5)weight loss of excess weight. Excess weight puts pressure on the stomach and forces acid and food back up

Medications-- The pentosec (pantoprazole) that you are using is fine, this type of medication decreases acid production but can sometimes take a few days to kick in

If it is not working for you, other similar meds can be tried such as omeprazole, lansoprazole and esomeprazole -- can be tried.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
