Posted on Fri, 10 Jul 2015
Question: I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend on the 11th of XXXXXXX I don't think I ejaculated but just as a precaution she took an ipill the same day within 9 hours. She had her last period on the 18th of May., So we had sex on a safe day as she has been having a regular cycle. She has not yet had her period and it's the 18th of XXXXXXX now. She has been having abdominal cramps and a white discharge from her vagina. What is our next step? What is the white discharge? And why has she not yet had her period?

Brief Answer:
You do not have to be worry about pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

You do not have to be worry about pregnancy because you have taken the emergency pill at the right time (Ipill should be taken not later than 72 hours after unprotected sex).

Ipill contains high dose of hormone levonorgestrel and it is very common for cycles to be disturbed after taking the Ipill. Regular period may be delayed for 1-2 week but it is impossible to tell exactly when your girlfriend will have it.

White discharge without itching and odor is normal. Between your periods it is normal to have a milky white vaginal discharge which will change in consistency as hormone levels rise and fall during menstrual cycle.

I suggest you to relax and wait for the period.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Thank you Dr. Stanko. She got her periods today. But she's having really painful abdominal cramps now. And it's affecting her mood. What could be the reason for this? Is there any way to ease the pain?

Brief Answer:
OTC pain reliever should help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Painful menstruation is a common side effect after taking emergency contraception. Also she may experience headache, nausea or breast tenderness. Over the counter pain reliever like Ibuprofen should help.

However if this pain will not go away you should make an appointment with your gynecologist to rule out serious conditions.

Best regards.
