Brief Answer:
may be inflamed though not infected

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Diverticula can become infected or inflamed/irritated.

The inflammation/irritation can occur without an infection being present.

Infection would present with increasing pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, bloating, passing a lot of air.

You can watch for these symptoms to determine if an infection is occurring. If this occurs then antibiotics would be needed.

In the meantime, in addition to the medication you are currently using, you can consider a clear diet for 24 to 48 hours to rest the bowel a little, if this is not a problem.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

This feels like pent up gas. I had to hold back a painful bout of abdominal pain and diarrhea for about an hr without access to a bathroom about a month ago. Since that time I've had this pain. Could this have caused this bowel upset. Trapped gas. I drink some ginger ale and take a gas relief pill that seems to help. Any other thoughts and what should I do?

Brief Answer:
may consider adding- peppermine, probiotics

Detailed Answer:
HI

Bloating/excess gas can cause pain.

In addition to the gas relief med and ginger, you can try peppermint tea or any peppermint you may have, this has actually be shown to be helpful in relieving some GI symptoms

Also the use of probiotics can help to restore GI flora and help with discomfort.

Using meds such as nexium, prilosec, prevacid, though can sometimes take a few days for effect to occur, may be helpful as well

Please feel free to ask anything else

I've sometimes felt it could be a kidney stone because there is sometimes back pain on that side...?

Is my time up? Do you have any further thoughts?

Brief Answer:
usually loin to groin pain that is severe, other urinary symptoms

Detailed Answer:
HI

Kidney stones cause severe pain that are typical loin to groin- starting mid back coming across to groin.
This is typical but some persons may not have the typical pain.

There may also be urinary symptoms such as frequency of urination, blood in the urine.

You can ask as many questions as you wish if you have any other queries

Ok - so ruling out Kidney stone probably. I tried some Metamucil yesterday, almost think it made matters worse. When I take a gas relief pill I do pass gas, not a lot, but feels better. Do you have any other thoughts or suggestions.

Brief Answer:
high fiber started in follow up phase when better

Detailed Answer:
HI

The high fiber is normally used after symptoms resolve, so when you are feeling better , you can restart it.
Used now, as you mentioned, if diverticula inflamed, may cause issues

Currently, using the gas pills that you mentioned, using pain relief such as naproxen/cataflam/ibuprofen, using the peppermint and medications mentioned, probiotics- should help

Let me know if anything else unclear

Dr. Do you have any thoughts on how long this inflammation takes to clear up?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Michelle Gibson James (7 hours later)
Brief Answer:
can last a few weeks

Detailed Answer:
HI

It can take a few weeks, up to 6 in some cases. In your case, it has been a month already.
If it is lasting longer than the 6 week period or it increases in any way, you should be reviewed by your doctor
