Question : I've had a persistent sore throat for 6 weeks - no fever went to Dr. who referred me to ENT Dr that I go to this week (Wed). In the mean time I was using sore Muscinex throat syrup and lozenges to ease the pain. On Friday, I developed mild discomfort in my abdomen a dull ache, I became constipated and took a laxative, but then yesterday developed a fever that went to 100 - took some asprin and slept most of the day. Today was better but fever came back, I to a 3 hour nap after church and feel generally fatigued but function. My stomach is still tight feeling but not like yesterday but today I noticed what I think is blood in my urine. What should I do next?

Brief Answer:

Dehydration coupled with infection

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

The persistent sore throat should be investigated first with throat swab. It is right to see the ENT now.

This had precipitated your other problem of abdomen discomfort and dull ache.

Are you sexually active?

A number of times I find elders who were constipated either have an illness just in the immediate past. This constipation can lead to urinary infection or prostate issues.

So one this is the reason why you have blood in the urine. But do not worry this would go off spontaneously as you correct dehydration.

Increase amount of water intake that helps constipation and urine problems.

Get blood counts, urine microscopy done when you meet the ENT. He can easily read the findings and help you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you, this reassuring and consistent with my thinking. To your question, yes I am sexually active but that and my interest in food has been less than normal over the last week.

Sine my fever is still hovering 99.5 degrees (ear measured) should I do something different than aspirin to manage?

Thank you again Dr.

Brief Answer:

Tylenol is better than Aspirin.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Fever under 100 degree should be left without medication. If you have other tiredness, body pains and a general feeling of unwell, you can take TAB TYLENOL instead of ASPIRIN.

If you do not feel good then you would not have an appetite for food.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
