What Causes Abdominal Spasms While Suffering From Low Potassium Level In Blood?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: my father had a low potassium, tremors all over the body, and spasms in his abdominal area. All kidney, full abdomen, lungs, thyroid tests are all clear. His potassium is slowly climbing with iv drip and tablets for a week now, but still on the low normal side. Now his hemoglobin is low. His spasms were controlled by muscle relaxants and bromezepam (i think). But 4 doctors are all baffled by his symptoms.
What do you think is missing in their tests? Doctors are cardiologist, neurologists, psychiatrist, and infectious diseases.

Brief Answer:
Rule out hypercalcemia

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I can certainly understand your concerns.

I apologize for the delayed response owing to my work schedule.

I have worked through your query in detail.

In the presence of the given symptoms, it's very important that your father gets tested for serum calcium, albumin and serum magnesium.

Since hypercalcemia is known to cause many such symptoms.

Further management is based on test results.

Simultaneously it is important to correct low hemoglobin as well.

Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these tests to you.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.

His magnesium level is good. We'll suggest the Calcium and Albumin tests. If these were abnormal, what are you looking at?

Brief Answer:
To evaluate for tetany or hyperPTH

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir/ Madam.

I can certainly understand your concerns.

I apologize for the delayed response owing to my work schedule.

Any disturbance of calcium can reflect as hypocalcemia which can cause Tetany or hypercalcemia. Both conditions can give rise to above symptoms.

in case of later, serum PTH(parathyroid hormone) testing is warranted to rule out hyperparathyroidism.

Please check with your physician if can prescribe these tests to him
