What Causes Abdominal Swelling While Recovering From Double Pneumonia?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: My husband had double pneumonia and lost a lot of weight. He is finally gaining some weigh back. Some of the weight is just above the belt line. It seems that the added weight (which isn't much) is more on the right than the left. It actually looks like that area is a little pointed, it isn't just like a round belly. My grandfather had liver cancer and it started with the abdomen swelling but it seemed like it was higher and on the right side verses my husbands being more in front. No changes in bowel or urinating and he feels fine and no pan or discomfort. Is this just normal weight gain and I am just not just used to it? He is diabetic type 1. All of his blood work kidney and liver function was normal this February. Urine test strips are not showing protein or high bilirubin.

Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

Since your husband has no symptoms at all and the blood tests show that the kidney function and liver function is normal ,there is nothing to worry about.
Most likely it is just due to weight gain.
If the cause was a pathological process ,he would have other symptoms for sure ,which would indicate the problem.
Possible causes of an increase of abdominal part ,apart weight gain ,is the accumulation of fluid due to a specific condition like liver failure or kidney failure (it is called ascites). This happens in the end stage of these conditions and this is not the case of your husband.

If you are very worried you can ask for an abdominal ultrasound. This would exclude any pathological cause and exclude the presence of liquid in his abdomen (peritoneal cavity). This will put your mind at rest.

In my opinion ,he has just gain weight and you have nothing to worry about.

Hope it helps.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
