Question : Hi. I have had a really bad cough for months now and some abdominal pain.I've had a chest X Ray which was clear, ultra sound scan normal. Blood tests normal though liver function was slightly elevated my GP said nothing to be concerned about. I have also had a spiometry lung test which was normal.
My GP thinks it is acid reflux so I have been prescribed lansoprezole (2 x 30mg tablets daily) plus Gaviscon 4 x per day. I have taken for 2 weeks now and the cough has improved from what is was but hasn't gone completely (I will still get bouts throughout the day).
However, I have now been experiencing further abdominal tenderness and pain on the upper left side and my metabolism has slower down. I cannot pass stools properly and there is mucus in my stools, stomach noises etc. It has got worse since medication. I had a colonoscopy last November but that was clear. Can I take Buscopan with the Lansoprezole and gaviscon and do you think that will improve things? Maybe the lansoprezole has triggered IBS again. I just want this cough to go completely and metabolism to go back to normal and pain to go.
What do you suggest? Shall I try the Buscopan with the Lansoprezole and gaviscon?

I read carefully all your concerns and I can say as follows :
1.Your symptoms like abdominal tenderness and pain after lanzoprasole use may be related with:
- lanzoprasole side effects
- IBS
- constipation due to lower fiber diet
2.With regards to your cough , acid reflux may be the cause since you have been improved are treatment.
Otherwise acid reflux need more than 8 weeks to get improvement.
3. You are asking if you can use buscopan with lanzoprasole? Yes you can use , there is no important interactios between them.

Thank you for quick response Dr Klerida.
However if the abdominal pain and irregular metabolism is a side effect of lansoprezole then how do I get round that? If I stop taking lansoprezole then my cough will return.
Would you suggest any better treatment to fix?

If your symptoms will be related with lanzoprasole. use than you can change lasoprasole with another drug like ranitidine twice per day plus antacids.
Meantime I would suggest to lower the dosage of lanzoprasole and start ranitidine 300 mg before bed time.
