What Causes Aches In The Liver Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 May 2017
Question: Hi,
I have a current problem which worries me.
For about 10 days I have felt aches in the liver area and around the right side towards the back. Generally off colour with low energy. I have loose bowels which are very yellow. My urine is now clear. I I'd take amoxyicilin for 3 days because I suspected a urine infection. I itched terribly so I stopped as soon as my urine was checked as clear. The itching has now stopped but I still feel unwell.

Information

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

What you are describing sounds like your liver is possibly inflamed. If this followed taking Amoxicillin, that may be the culprit.

Symptoms of liver inflammation or hepatitis are liver area pain, sometimes yellowish skin, and in some cases, pale stools and dark urine.

This can come on from many reasons including medications, gastrointestinal infection, liver related viral infections, alcohol use, and other reasons. Gall bladder obstruction, such as with stones, can cause problems too.

Here is what I recommend you do now:
1. Go in to your doctor to have a CBC (complete blood count) done to assess for infection.
2. Also have a liver panel blood test done. This is a test of the enzymes the liver produces, and also the bilirubin level. (Elevated bilirubin might account for the "off color").
3. Avoid taking more than 2000 mg of paracetamol per day as it can be hard on the liver. Limit your intake of this in general until whatever is going on with your liver is sorted out.
4. The doctor should do an exam, particularly of the abdomen and assess the size of your liver.
5. Depending on the above findings, you may need an abdominal ultrasound to see what is going on with your liver and gall bladder.
6. Let your doctor know that you had itching during and after taking Amoxicillin. This should be noted in your medical records. You will likely need to avoid this particular antibiotic in the future due to allergy to it.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
