What Causes Acid Reflex And Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: I am experiencing what I believe is acid reflux. I take Equate Cimetidine or WalZan (active ingredient Ramitidine.) I take 2 pills and then eat many tablets of Tums. If I catch it in time, I can handle the pain. If I don't catch it in time I can't hardly handle the pain and the intense pain lasts for an hour or longer and I think I am going to die. Is this amount of pain normal for acid reflux? I have told my doctor and she sympathizes. She prescribed Pantaprazole and I took a daily pill for months, but I can't get the prescription refilled.

Brief Answer:
can cause severe pain, try over the counter proton pump meds like pantopra

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Acid reflux can sometimes be associated with severe pain. There may also be associated gastritis (irritation of the stomach) and in some severe cases , ulceration of the esophagus or stomach.

In some persons , if the reflux is not responsive to appropriate treatment then a blood test should be done for h pylori bacteria. This bacteria can cause the symptoms of reflux to worsen.
If found then a prolonged course of 2 antibiotics along with a reflux med is needed.

Pantoprazole or meds in this family of medication would be best because they stop the acid from being produced. They can take a few days for an effect because they cannot do anything about the acid already there but after 5 to 7 days ( when this acid is gone) , then should have best effect.

If you cannot get the pantoprazole then you should get another medication from this family of meds that may be over the counter eg prevacid or prilosec

These are also proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole.

For the first few days combine with cimetidine or ranitidine .

If no response after a prolonged period then consider test for h pylori and imaging to rule out an ulceration.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
