Question: I have had acid reflux for 3 months. I had an endoscopy and biopsies. My doctor did not find anything. I have been on protonix. Over time I have developed muscle pain, dizziness and trouble sleeping. I was on prilosec and it did not help my acid reflux. What do you recommend?

Brief Answer:
Both pharmacological and non pharmacological measures need to be followed

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome
Acid reflux can not be addressed only by medication, it also requires a non pharmacological measures.
I would suggest few measures that will be beneficial.

A. Consume plenty of water. Keep a water bottle on the working desk and keep sipping water on and off as required. I also advise to drink a glass of water an hour before and after food to make sure of intake of adequate water.
B. Avoid excess consumption of tea/ coffee/ hydrogenated drinks.
C. Avoid smoking and alcohol, if any.

D. Antacids like Digene or Gelusil syp, 2tsp in 50ml of water three to four times a day half an hour before food.
You can also take capsule omeprazole 20 mg once daily empty stomach, before breakfast for a week. You are on this medicines as mentioned by you.

E. Maintain a gap of atleast 2 hrs in between dinner and going to bed. Eat frequent small meals instead of heavy ones and do not starve. Do not lie down immediately after food, walk for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Keep your head end slightly raised when sleeping
F. Avoid spicy and oily food for few days till the symptoms are resolved.
G. Avoid or reduce the intake of meat, dairy products, and add more fiber to your diet. Eat lots of salads, vegetables, fresh fruits, Avoid eating fast and talking while eating.

Regular exercise is very much essential. Follow this measures your symptoms should reduce.
Hope this helps
Take care
