Hello,

Alopecia areata has an autoimmune etiology. Pathogenic T cells found in the dermal infiltrate of the patch secrete chemicals known as cytokines which transform hair follicle from anagen (growth phase) to telogen (resting phase) and the hair is subsequently shed from that area.
