What Causes Ammonia Smelling Vaginal Discharge?

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Mar 2016
Question: I am a woman, 71 years old. It has been 10 years since I have seen a OB/GYN. I have had a hysterectomy because of fibroids many years ago. My question, I have an ammonia smelling discharge. I wear a panty liner and have to change twice a day. I did make an appointment with a GYN but I can't see her until March.
What do you think my body is telling me?
Thank you , Jeri in Mission Viejo, CA

Brief Answer:
Various causes

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Post menopausal discharge can be due to senile vaginitis or atrophic vagina, due to local lesions in cervix or vagina, or can be due to urine leaking into the vagina( due to vesicovaginal fistula).
Ammonical smell is present in urine.
Aproper internal examination by an OBGYN specialist will confirm the diagnosis and further management should be done accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
