What Causes An Increase In The PSA Levels?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: I just came back from the doctor today and he told me I am very healthy and my blood work was fantastic except for my PSA which was 7.9. That is up from 6.5 approximately 10 years ago. What should I think about what he said. Naturally he is sending me to a urologist for further testing. Does this mean I probably have prostate cancer?

Brief answer.....no it doesn't mean any prostate cancer.
Detailed answer...
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Your rise of PSA from 6.5 to 7.9 in 10 years is pretty normal and in no way suggest development of prostate cancer. It could simply be due to prostate enlargement or from some recent sexual activity, however it would be very good for you to consult a urologist for the proper assessment which can be done by DRE and TRUS ( trans rectal ultrasound ).
Many a times it has been seen that a repeat PSA test after a gap of 4 weeks come to the base line level.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
