What Causes Anal Itching And White Stringy Substance In Stool?

Posted on Thu, 11 May 2017
Question: My son is in the military. He was having anus itching and some white stringy things in his stool a few weeks ago. They gave him Albendazole 3 weeks ago. He took the one dose and then last week took the 2nd dose as directed. He has cleaned, disinfected everything, sheets, etc several times. He wasnt having anything in the stool for a few days before he took the 2nd dose. Then once he took the 2nd dose, he has been having some, not as many, stringy white things in the stool again. He wasn't sure if that medication got it all. They gave him Reese's pinworm treatment to take now when he went in again today. How long would he have the discharge in the stool after taking the 2nd dose? Is it common to still have some in the stool and still have killed them all? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Stool sample should be taken for microscopy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking query on this forum.
The process your son is going through is called deworming. Ideally the stool containing white worms should be taken to laboratory for microscopic examination.Once the worms are identified like whether they are pin worms or round worms or tape worms doses of albendazole could be adjusted again.

Albendazole once in a week is an umbrella therapy and covers almost all the helminth however once a particular worm is identified doses can be given as per the regimen used on that specific worm.

As per your query single dose never kills all worm. You should take stool sample for microscopic examination and further treatment could be modified according to the strain of parasite involved.

Regards.

Thank you. He took a second dose 2 weeks following the first dose. Since he is in the military, they unfortunately don't follow up like they should. So they just gave him more medication today for three more doses. I was just wondering how long should he continue to see them in the stool following the doses he takes? Thanks

Would he also be able to still visit with adult family members without being contagious if extreme toileting hygiene is completed before and after?

Brief Answer:
follow up

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
As per your query you could see worms in his stools till gut is completely dewormed. I think he is heavily infested with worms and will take about a week or two more.
He is not contagious. He can visit everyone but before eating food hands should be properly washed.

Regards.
