What Causes Back Pain After Consuming Alcohol?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Apr 2014
Question: Per my last response, I told you I was seeing an orthopedic doctor for back pain. He believes my pain is related to muscular probably caused from severe tension. I am visiting a PT 2 to 3 times per week. As my history indicates, I have mild gastritis. My abdominal pain is minimal, but reacts when I eat too much red meat. The one thing that is very puzzling is why does my back, mid to upper, gets very sore when I have any alcohol, even one beer. Please review my history, because, I have had many discussions on this site. Please advise. XXXX

Brief Answer: its pancreatitis due to alcohol intake Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXXX Glad to hear from you again. It looks like you are sensitive to red meat. When you eat it, your stomach produces excess acid in response to it, leading to acute episode of gastritis. Also your pancreas is highly sensitive to alcohol in any concentration, leading to back pain at that region on its intake. It would be better to avoid those two, to prevent unwanted pain. These two diseases are chronic and medicine treat mostly symptomatically, to get a long lasting relief, you need to incorporate diatery modifications as per your body's reactions to certain food items. This is the best and safest way, with no side effects. Also reduce your stress level, as stress increases acid production in the stomach, leading to gastritis and back pain. Yes gastritis pain can also be referred to the back, as in your case. You can try meditation or yoga to reduce your stress. These lifestyle changes will go a long way in the cure of these disease. This I have already seen in so many of my patients. Many of them now dont need medicine even. Wishing you a healthy life with no stress. Dr. Ashish Verma

Dr XXXXXXX I am confused on the pancreatis. As I stated in prior discussions, I have had this same back pain since January and since then I have had a CT scan, a MRI, and a MRCP, and none of these have shown inflammation of the pancreas. I have met with a pancreatic specialist, an orthopedic specialist and twice with my GP and none have even suggested pancreatis. Also, wouldn't I also have pain in the upper middle abdomin and isn't the pain quite severe. Also, if I had chronic pancreatis, how is it reversible?

Brief Answer: it is mild pancreatitis, more like an irritation Detailed Answer: Hi, Your pancreatitis is more like an irritation, not an inflammation, which get triggered by alcohol. So its not showing on ct or mri or blood tests. The only way is to stop alcohol intake. See, to put it in simple terms, it more like your pancreas is allergic to alcohol. When you take alcohol its gets irritated, and subsides when you dont. Its the initial stage, you continue alcohol and it will change to full blown pancreatitis. Then you can see the damage on the mri. Every person is different. They have different tolerance to different food items. For eg. some can drink liters of alcohol without any kick, while some get knocked out in a glass of bear. Yours being the initial stage, can be cured by diet alone. So no alcohol. Dr. Ashish Verma

Is it also possible that that the gastritis is the real cause, or muscle, because I have days when I have no alcohol and get little or no pain in the stomach, but pain in the upper back. Also , how can I get tested for an irritated pancreas?

Brief Answer: sorry for the confusion. Detailed Answer: Dear XXXXXXX I m sorry for the confusion caused. Let me clarify it all. Your back is multifactorial, its primary cause is posture related muscle pain. For that you need to continue the excersises with yout PT. This gastritis and pancreatic irritation just add to it. Thats why i said, that what you actually need is a lifestyle modification. That includes your diet and posture and stress. And for that yoga is the best way, it will take care of most of the things. And this i m telling you with my years of experience with my patients. Just give it a try. There is nothing to loose. Regards Dr. Ashish Verma
