What Causes Back Pain In Both The Lower Areas While Treating Diverticulitis?

Question: Hi,
I've written about my one month bout of diverticulitis way too many times.
All of my symptoms were starting to quiet down until I re-introduced fiber and Citrucel to my diet.
I'm now back to having pain on both my lower left and lower right sides - no fever, chills, nausea, just pain (scale of 5).
The NP from my GI office called me and told me to start a clear liquid diet to see if things would calm down - not another course of antibiotics
I'm so afraid I'm going to end of having to have surgery.

Brief Answer:
If there is no evidence of an active infection, surgery is not indicated

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Female/54 - Known case of diveriticulitis - symptoms were quietening down until fiber and citrucel was re-introduced in diet - now pain on both right and left sides again - pain on scale of 5/10 - but no other symptms like fever, chills or nausea - The NP from GI office advised to start clear liquid diet to see if things would calm down - afraid that this will end with surgery ...

The causes of pain in both the lower areas can be colitis, that is inflammation of the colon or IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).

I would advise you the following:

You have to reduce or stop the fiber and Citrucel in diet.

If the CT scan and colonoscopy are now normal to start anti-spasmodic medicines in consultation with your GI and get a relief.

Control of the stress and/or anxiety.
Dietary changes as advised by your NP and the Doctor

As said in earlier Q-A session, if there is no active diverticulitis there is no need of any surgery.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Regards
