What Causes Bad Smell In Nose Despite Quitting Smoking 2 Years Back?
?? sinusitis, tonsilitis, lodged particles, etc; need ENT consult sir
Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.
Thank you for writing to us.
I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I completely understand your complaint and would like you to know that there is always some underlying cause for such a presentation. Although I have a request to put forward to your sir, could you please try and describe the kind of odour you are experiencing, as this helps to find the cause for the presentation in a more accurate manner. I shall either way provide you with all the information you need and the way forward sir.
In the meantime, I shall go ahead and list the various causes for a smell in the nose:
+Sinusitis: One of the most common causes for bad smell in nose. It can be diagnosed with a PNS x-ray, and will require a visit to your ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist sir. I would also like to add that sinusitis is very common in smokers, or even those individuals who have discontinued smoking (as the past history of smoking would have already caused the sinus abnormalities)
+Tonsilitis: An upper respiratory tract infection can cause the tonsils to inflame and even get infected that can result in strange smells in the nose. But along with this, you will also have other symptoms like difficulty swallowing, possibly a runny nose, at times fever, sensation of a lump in the throat, etc. This helps to differentiate it from other conditions
+Lodged food, or other particles in the throat, nostril, etc. Blowing your nose quite hard can at times cause the expulsion of old food, or other particles. An ENT specialist can help clear this for you
+Zenkers diverticulum: Is a cup like cavity developed in your oesophagus which results in the accumulation of food particles, which can result in them getting spoilt and rotten, in turn resulting in the foul odour in the nose, as well as from the mouth (symptom called halitosis). An x ray of the throat region will help diagnose this, usually with the help of a barium swallow
I hope I have explained things in a manner best understood by you sir. I hope you can manage to schedule an appointment with an ENT specialist as he/she would be the best specialist to help you rid yourself of this presentation. Please try your best not to restart smoking, as this will only aggravate the condition and make the presentation worse. Please also, do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you.
Best wishes sir.
