What Causes Bad Taste In Mouth A Week After An Apendectomy?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: I am 66 years old and had an apendectomy 5 weeks ago. A week after surgery I developed a bad taste in my mouth. It is not metallic, more of an iron heavy taste. The only thing that relieves it for a short time is drinking a Coke. I don't drink soda so this is not something I want to do. What causes this and how long can it last. It is horrible. Nothing tastes good. Any suggestions for relief?

Brief Answer:
I will recommend you sip the coke regularly for relief!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this bad taste that you have reported. This is most likely a side effects of the drugs used during and after the surgery. Because coke relieves this bad taste, I will say go ahead and sip it regularly. However, avoid drinking excess quantities in day.

Generally, it may take several weeks for this to get over. Though you don’t like soda, taking it for medical purposes is different. The general approach to handling bad mouth taste is to identify something that soothes and relieves it, you have already identified one and going further to test several products will not be smart. Taking coke for health reasons should’t make you feel bad like drinking soda for the fun of doing so.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
