What Causes Bleeding Near Penis Tip Post Catheterization?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: I just started intermittent catheterization three days ago. It has been uncomfortable. Today I noticed mild bleeding near penis tip immediately after catheterization was done. Should I be concerned? Should I delay
next catheterization which is due in 5-6 hours?

Brief Answer:
Pls see detailed answer.

Detailed Answer:
Good Day and thank you for being with Healthcare Magic!

It is but natural to feel uncomfortable and a little pain when starting to learn intermittent catheterization. There is a learning curve involved and it is something to get used to. If you are draining less than 300 mL for every catheterization then you may delay for a few hours. For every catheterization you should be getting less than 450mL of urine, if you are getting more than this then catheterization interval time should decrease.

You should have adequate or excessive lubrication on your catheter prior to insertion to lessen the friction and lessen the damage to the urethra.
Do it as gently as possible.

Thank you for your response. It helped alleviate my concerns. One follow up question. So I should not be concerned if occassionally there is small amounts of blood on penis or catheter.

Brief Answer:
Yes small amount is no concern at all.

Detailed Answer:
I am glad I am able to help you with your concern. Yes small amount of blood in the penile tip or the catheter is normal after CIC (clean intermittent catheterization). As you get the hang of it then your body will adapt to the constant friction when inserting and removing the catheter plus your skill in doing it also increases.
