Posted on Mon, 4 Aug 2014
Question: May daughter has had her second set of tubes in for four years. One fell out last year and the other has fallen out but is sitting in her ear canal. She had some bleeding this weekend in her ear. Is this normal? She said she doesn't have any pain, but it is "itchy"

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Get both the ear drums checked to see if the myringotomy (incision site where the grommet is inserted) sites have healed.

2. If the ear drums are intact, flushing the ears is not an issue.

3. If the ear drums have not yet healed, especially in the ear in which the grommet is still lying in the canal, an ear infection may be the source of the bleeding. It may also be the edges of the myringotomy site bleeding. In any case, bleeding from the ear is not considered normal. Flushing is not recommended without a detailed direct examination of the ear drum.

4. The 'itchy' feel may be due to a fungal infection (otomycosis),a mild ear infection or wound healing.

I hope that I have answered your questions and if you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
