Question: 30 year old female, morbidly obese with PCOS, otherwise healthy....I am frequently getting blood clots in my mouth although it is not infected, I pop and drain, it goes away for a week or so then returns, very painful until drained. What could cause this? What can I do about it?

Brief Answer:
gum infection, bleeding disorder, oral prophylaxis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query.

I have gone through your query. The cause for frequent blood clots in the mouth could be the infection of the gums or any cuts in mucosa or tongue. The bleeding can also occur because of platelet disorders like idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura or any clotting factor deficiencies like hemophilia. PCOS also causes increased blood pressure that can cause rupture of terminal arteries that can lead to bleeding.

If I am your treating doctor I would have suggested you to get a complete blood investigation done including BT, CT, Platelet count and INR, to rule out the bleeding disorder. You should also get an oral examination to rule out infection in the gums or any other pathology like pyogenic granuloma which induces bleeding even after a mild touch or brushing.

I suggest that you consult an oral physician and discuss about my views.

I hope my answer will help you. take care. if any queries you can message me back.
