What Causes Blood Discharge After Bowel Movement?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: My seven year old has recently had bright red blood on the toilet paper several times after a bowl movement. I don't see blood in his stool. He often complains of stomach aches, but his pediatrician has said there's no problem. I'm not sure if that's correct. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of anal fissure to be considered

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms

Presence of blood in tissue paper without associated streaking of stool with blood is most likely to be due to anal fissure. Following could be the predisposing factors

1. Decreased intake of fiber in diet

2. Decreased intake of water

Both the factor lead to hardening of stool causing bleeding. Exact diagnosis will depend on clinical examination of anal region. I would suggest you the following

1 Ensure Good intake of water : 1 cup of water 1 hour before every meal and 1 cup of water 1 hour after every meals will ensure adequate intake of water

2. High fiber diet : 2 servings of vegetable salad and 2 servings of fruits especially citrus fruit will ensure adequate intake of water

3. Hot Seitz bath : To a tub of lukewarm water add 2 spoons of antiseptic solution. Make child sit in it for 15 to 20 minutes each session twice a day.

4. Stool softner like Lactulose will be helpful

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take care
