Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: I have noticed once in a great while ,a little blood coming out of my nipple. I breastfed 35 years ago, does that have anything to do with that ? Should I go to the doctor? I don't have pain or see a lump.

Yes, to seek medical advise and investigation if though necessary

Detailed Answer:
hi.
Thanks for your query.

To recapitulate: Female / 70 - noticed once a little blood coming from the nipple - breast feeding 35 years back- Wants to know he relation between the two and whether to go to the Doctor.

There is no relation of breast feeding 35 years back and bleeding now from the nipple.
Yes, you should seek immediate medical attention.

The reasons for blood from the nipple are as follows:
- Benign lesions as papiloma, infection and so on (you do not have any symptoms)
- Cancer of the breast, particularly of the ducts.

This is why is the necessity to seek an opinion of the Doctor, preferably a General Surgeon or Oncosurgeon. He would advise have a clinical evaluation, actual physical examination of both the breasts, armpits and neck for any mass / lymph nodes.
He would advise you the further investigations like Mammography, ultrasonography, FNAC if the lump is visible and biopsy to confirm.

Further treatment will necessarily be dependent upon the findings.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis, and get a proper further treatment. Please feel free to ask for more if you need to or if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
