What Causes Blood In Stool After Chemotherapy Treatment?

default
Posted on Sat, 27 Jun 2015
Question: I am a 55 yr old cancer patient who completed the first chemo treatment May 27th, after a mastecomy April 6, 2015. I just returned from eating a glazed baby'back rib dinner with lots of chili. I went to the bathroom and there was a large amount of blood in the stool. I have had bloody leakage over the past hour and a half from my colon. Is this something which is normal if I have eaten baby'back ribs with BBQ sauce, which may have irritated my colon or is this something that requires immediate medical attention? Or is this part of the chemo? What should I do?

Brief Answer:
this blood leak needs investigation

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

First of all, having a glazed babyback rib dinner with lots of chilli after chemotherapy is not a good idea at all. Chemotherapy can irritate the intestine and if further irritated with spicy food can lead to bleeding. Low platelets from chemo can also cause bleeding.

Another possibility is that there maybe some other lesion in the intestine which has caused this bleeding. It may be a polyp or tumor even.

You need to attend the ER immediately and get evaluation done. Need to see if the blood counts have dropped.

There is nothing to worry. If proper evaluation and treatment is done then this can be taken care of.

Hope I have answered your query. I will be available for further follow up.
Regards
