Question : My husband (83) has alzheimers, and cannot urinate - he has a catheter and blood in the urine since the catheter was inserted 2 months ago. He is with Hospice, but I am wondering if there is anything that can be done for him.

Brief Answer:
Investigations to rule out urine tract infections

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Blood in urine after catheter placement may come from damage or scratched urine ways.

There is need for continuous isotonic saline solution irrigation of the catheter and bladder.

Increasing fluid consumption helps.

If there is associated urinary infection this should be checked with urine test and proper antibiotics treatment should be started.

I suggest you to discuss with Hospice personnel above mentioned possibilities.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
