default
Posted on Thu, 5 Jun 2014
Question: My doctor prescribed a daily 5mg daily dose of warfarin after recent tests discovered atrial fibrillation. My INR has jumped to 8.9 and there is blood in my urine, I have been off the warfarin for 4 days but have no improvement in either problem. By the way, I had an angioplasty 30 years ago. I am a 77 year old male.

Brief Answer:
If blood still in urine, go to ED.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic.
After 4 days off Warfarin, I would expect your INR to have come down close to an acceptable range. Blood in your urine suggests that your INR is still too high. Therefore, I suggest you go to the ED for treatment. If it is found that your INR is still high then treatment can be given to reduce it more rapidly.
There are other causes of blood in the urine, unrelated to warfarin but if the blood appeared at the same time as you started the warfarin then this is the likely cause.
I hope this is of help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
