Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: I have noticed blood in my urine. Fifteen years ago I had a uric acid kidney stone and I have not had any problems since. I drink 8 or more glasses of water or lemon water every day. I am 62 years old female. What might be causing the problem and what should I do?

Brief Answer:
Stones

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Recurrence of stone in the kidney is very common in people who have history of kidney stones. Drinking adequate water is only a suggestion to prevent stones. It is important to avoid food with high uric acid like red meat, aerated drinks, etc in order to avoid recurrence of stones and also one has to be on uric acid lowering agents. I usually put my patients on Febuxostat 40 mg once a day.

I suggest you to get an ultrasound abdomen done along with urine routine to confirm the diagnosis. I also recommend getting renal function and uric acid levels done

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Regards
