Question : My 6 year old is otherwise very healthy at 18.8 Kgs. During a routing urine test we found 1+ RBC. last year. Around an year later, it is still there. No other abnormalities in blood and urine test. But GP referred to Nephrologist next month. I wish to know, is this necessary. Since he is so healthy active and little, I don't want him to undergo a series of tests, especialy biopsy etc (not sure if doc will suggest but am scared.). Do I really need to investigate this further or check back after an year or so?
Also, if we do go, what will be the process of investigation and what all tests will he undergo?
Also wish to inform there were no issues found on an ultrasound test

                                    Brief Answer:
You should visit a nephrologist and avoid ongoing damage to kidneys.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone through your query and understand your concens. 1+ RBC in urine could indicate two possibilities. The first is some structural abberation and the second is leaky filtering membrane. In either case, it is important to visit a nephrologist and to get it properly evaluated. Probably he would go for a DMSA scan which would help in ruling out some obstruction as a possible cause. Things like narrowing of the ureters are not identifiable on an ultrasonogram.
Let me know if I could help further.
