Brief Answer:
Hematuria can be caused by the following:

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

If you see XXXXXXX blood in your urine, you should go in to see a doctor promptly. You can go to an urgent care clinic to get your evaluation started so that there isn't delay.

Blood in the urine (hematuria) can be caused by both innocuous and serious things. Causes include a bladder infection, kidney infection (usually there is nausea and fever with this), stones anywhere in your urinary tract (bladder, kidney, ureters), problems with the prostate (infections, inflammation). Unfortunately, hematuria can also be caused by cancer in the prostate, kidneys, or bladder. An injury to the kidneys can cause blood in the urine, and very strenuous exercise can too. So can anticoagulants such as Coumadin, heparin, and aspirin.

The thing to do is go in to be seen promptly and give a urine specimen for urinalysis. This should not be just the immediate dip stick urine evaluation that can be done on the spot, but the urine should also be sent to the lab for a full urinalysis. Other tests such as a complete blood count and PSA, and likely an X-ray of your abdomen/pelvis, can be taken in the urgent care or ER (if the urgent care is closed). The results of these will dictate further testing, such as a kidney ultrasound, etc.

So: please go in to be seen and get an evaluation started.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
