What Causes Blood In Urine?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Aug 2016
Question: I have been passing blood in my urine for 4 days. It is not consistent, but on at least 2 occasions, I passed a worm like clot or so it appeared to be. I have had slight pain in my urinary tract immediately after each episode, but after that it the blood seems to subside. it started again yesterday afternoon and is continuing very slowly with much less blood each time. in both cases, it appeared to start after i was on a treadmill for about an hour. I did go to the doctor today. He ordered a ct scan and a full metabolic blood test. I am sure he will refer me to a urologist when the test are done. i am obviously fearful that it is bladder cancer. I have been a past smoker. Can other things be causing this besides bladder cancer and is bladder cancer treatable?

Brief Answer:
Could be due Enlarged Prostate .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have Hematuria since 4 days .

I can assure that you do not have Cancer of the Bladder .Bladder cancer always presents with gross Hematuria ( large volume of XXXXXXX blood in urine )

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Do you have other voiding symptoms like increased frequncy for urination ,urgency.nocturnal frequency etc ?
2) What is the dose of Aspirin you are taking ?

The blood in urine (hematuria) is mostly due to tear of a small superficial vein on the surface of enlarged prostate which is common at this age or due to side effect of Aspirin .

Consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine routine and culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis with specific mention of Post Void Urine Residue (PVR).
3) Serum PSA.
4) Endoscopic Examination of Bladder (Cystoscopy).

In the mean while
1)Stop taking your Aspirin for couple of days
2) Take Tomsulosin once daily
3) Take antibiotic like Cefotaxime and Nitrofurantoin twice daily .
4) Drink more water

Further treatment will depend upon result of these tests and final diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards.

I WAS TAKING 81 MG COATED CHILD DOSAGE (1 ASPIRIN) ONCE A DAY. I USED TO HAVE FREQUENT URINATION UNTIL I STARTED TAKING TOMULOSIN AT BEDTIME AS DIRECTED. I DID STOP TAKING THE ASPIRIN. AT FIRST MY URINE HAD A FLOW OF BLOOD IN IT. THAT NIGHT IT SEEMED LIKE A WORM LIKE FORM OF BLOOD CLOT CAME OUT. THEN IT STOPPED FOR 3 DAYS. IT HAPPENED AFTER I WAS on a treadmill for about an hour. I stopped exercising and the blood in the urine seem to go away. I was drinking lots of water. 3 days later I did the treadmill again and the blood showed up in the urine again. I also saw another clot, so I went to the doctor today. I am still waiting on the blood test, urinalysis, and the CT SCAn which has to be approved by insurance. At times the blood seemed like a lot although the amount would quickly reduce each time I urinated. On at least one occasion, i seem to just urinate a very small amout of blood. I am not sure what I would look for to determine if it was a "LARGE VOLUME OF XXXXXXX BLOOD IN THE URINE". ANY FURTHER EXPLANATION OF THAT WOULD BE MOST HELPFUL. THE DOCTOR DID INITIALLY DIAGNOSIS IT AS HEMATURIA, BUT AND HE ORDERED A BLOOD TEST, URINEANALYSIS, AND A CT SCAN AND POSSIBLE CYSTOSCOPY, BUT HE DID NOT PRESCRIBE THE TWO MEDICATIONS YOU SUGGESTED. SHOULD I CALL HIM BACK TO ASK FOR THESE MEDICATION. THANK YOU, XXXXXXX XXXX

Thank you for your response. My Doctor called me today to inform me that there were cancer cells in blood in urine. It was gross hematuria. I am taking a ct scan tomorrow and seeing an urologist afterwards. He told me it could be in the bladder, ureatha, or the kidney. After I asked him, he told me that gross hematuria was the earliest symptom from Bladder cancer. He also told me that the cancer may have existed way before the gross hematuria. Obviously I am hoping that I discovered this early enough so it can be treated. Can this cancer be malignant and/or benign?
I suppose I will find out more tomorrow, but I got concerned when he told me it could have been there before the gross hematuria presented itself. The bleeding and gross hematura has stopped, at least for today. He also told me that of all the cancers, bladder cancer was one of the easier ones to treat. I was curious if there was anymore general information you could provide me with. I apologize for asking you all of this, but I did not realize it was gross hematuria when I originally wrote my inquiry. Thank you, XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
C.T Scan of Kidney, ureter and bladder will reveal the nature of lesion .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up .The C.T Scan of abdomen will highlight the nature of the lesion ,site of the lesion etc ,However whether it is benign or malignant can be confirmed only after histopathological examination of the piece of tissue from the lesion (Biopsy) which will require endoscopic procedure either cystoscopy if the lesion in bladder or ureteroscopy if the lesion is in ureter .

The further treatment will depend upon the site and nature of the lesion .

Go ahead and do write about the final diagnosis .

Thanks and Regards.
