What Causes Blood Stained Sputum?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: i'm a female 27 years old woman.
From mid-July or so, I started to find small traces of blood in the saliva just popping up (no cough, as if they were capillaries). In the following days I started to feel a burning sensation in the chest radiating behind the back with nausea. I lasted two or three days and then I threw up about twenty minutes after lunch on the 4th of august. I threw up dark red and likely coagulated blood mixed with fragments of undigested food. This blood I thought was pretty dense and after vomiting I felt like freed. I went to the emergency room and they made me a drip of plasil and blood tests with results of leukocytosis (16.7, particularly neutrophilia). They made me do gastroscopy and visit otolaryngology (both negative)
.
I have repeated blood tests about a week ago the values returned to normal without taking medicine. But I noticed a small swollen lymph node above the left clavicle, indolent and XXXXXXX touch. I am very concerned about serious diseases of the respiratory system (I quit smoking two months ago after 13 years about 15 cigarettes a day)

Brief Answer:
NEED INVESTIGATION. CONSULT WITH PULMONOLOGIST.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

According to your given history and information, there are several reasons of blood stained sputum with swollen lymph node over left clavicle.

These could be Bronchitis, Bronchiectasis, Tuberculosis, Lung abscess or Cancer etc. High rate of cigarette smoking for long duration (over 13 years) is the main underlying etiology for above mentioned pathological diseases.

You have to undergo several test and investigations to narrow down the underlying causes and confirm the diagnosis. It will be also helpful to know the stage or prognosis of the current disease.

Digital chest X-RAY would be the FIRST investigation in this case. Some other investigations like bloody sputum culture, bronchial fiber endoscopy or CT virtual bronchoscopy, repeated blood count, FNAC of the enlarged lymph node etc are required according to stage of the disease.

I suggest you to contact with your nearest Physician or Pulmonologist at the earliest for proper management of the case. NO MORE SMOKING FOR THE REST OF THE LIFE.

Hope, it would be helpful for your information and understanding. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
