What Causes Blood Tinged Urine After Catheter Insertion?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: I had hysterectomy two weeks ago but was injured by a catheter inserted prior to the procedure(experitoneal injury). The injury was repaired and i was sent home with a catheter for 17 days. Its going to be removed this thursday. However, i still discharge some clots in urine and sometimes urine tinged with blood. I have no fever and feel mild pain. Could there be a problem? Should i perform any test or scan prior to cathter removal?

Brief Answer:
Detailed answer below

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.Injury to the bladder during catheterization leads to damage to bladder lining, and the urine will be mixed with blood or will be blood tinged till the injury is completely healed.
You should report this to your treating doctor, and he/she might consider delaying the removal of catheter by one week more, so as to facilitate healing of the bladder injury.Delay should be considered in your case and catheter should be removed once the urine is no more blood tinged.

Brief Answer:
Urine routine and microscopic examination

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, yes you should get a urine routine and microscopic examination from the urine collected from the catheter. If it shows more than 10 red blood cells per high power field, then the catheter removal should be delayed by another one week.
