What Causes Bloody Stool?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: I eat really clean , no grains, no dairy, had some blood in stool awhile back .. took in sample recently ... waiting on results. Now I am having stomach pains in lower stomach, not intense , just bothersome, more like cramping .. although they did wake me up last night. Loose stools and red flakes that are floating. Wondering if that is dried blood or something I have eaten... never have had /seen red flakes like this before.... if it continues of course I will go in... I had been out of town and ate some sweet things .. which isn't really normal in my diet... so wondering if the change in diet is causing these stomach issues... thanks

Brief Answer:
Food malabsorption/rectal bleeding...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The red flakes you had in your stool might be due to:
- Food malabsorption
- consumption of red foods that were not well digested
- rectal bleeding

Further diagnostic tests are needed for final conclusions:
- fecal occult blood
- culture of stool
- colonoscopy

Depending on the tests results, specific treatment will be prescribed.

For the moment, I can only advise to continue following the healthy diet as you are doing now.

All the best!
Dr. Klerida
