What Causes Breakthrough Bleeding While On Ovestin?

Posted on Thu, 17 Dec 2015
Question: Hi I am a 43 year old woman normal weight. I have had 1 child 16 years ago. I have never taken birth control and I dont smoke or drink. My gynecological history is very clean. Recently I started taken Vitex to normalise my periods as they were getting shorter in duration and the bleeding lasted 10 days sometimes or worse 2 weeks on occassion. It worked like a charm. An internal exam revealed a few small fibroids. I tend to suffer from cystitis that flares so my doctor gave me Ovestin. I like the Ovestin alot and it helps but now and again i get breakthrough bleeding when i use Ovestin. As soon as I bleed I stop using it. No other symptoms using Ovestin. Why does this happen??

Brief Answer:
Fibroid can be the possible cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concerns.

In my opinion, the bleeding is not related to use of ovestin as it contains low doses of estriol.

As you have mentioned that internal examination revealed fibroids, I think this may the reason for bleeding. I would suggest you to go for ultrasound examination to determine the size and location of fibroids.

Another possibility would be dysfunctional uterine bleeding if fibroids are ruled out as the main cause of bleeding.

Kindly talk to your doctor about this.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Hi,

The bleeding is triggered by the use of Ovestin, it has happened 3 or 4 times now on the actual night I used the Ovestin. So there is a connection. I am wondering what the extra estrogen is doing.

Brief Answer:
Excess estrogen promotes growth of fibroids.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
Sorry for the late response.

The possible connection between extra estrogen and bleeding could be:

Estrogen promotes growth of fibroids.
But ultimately, the reason for bleeding would be fibroids in my opinion.

So, this has to be addressed.

Hope this answers your query.
Thanks.
