Brief Answer:
Workup needed if empiric treatment for common causes fails

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Such a breath smell can be related to alcohol and smoking, gingivitis, tonsillitis, tooth abscess and an associated improper oral hygiene, increased intake of food like garlic and onions.

Diabetes, liver failure, renal failure can also give rise to odd smelling breath. Initially a chlorhexidine containing mouthwash should be used thrice a day especially after meals and regular gargles with Listerine or saline should also be done. If these measures fail to improve the smell then the symptom would require further evaluation and workup including an oral exam, blood counts, metabolic profile , urinalysis, in consult with your doctor.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
