What Causes Brown Discharge After Novasure?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Apr 2014
Question: Dear Doctor, I had Novasure procedure on 11 Feb 2014. Since then, I have watery, bloody discharge. In end of February, I was suffering from infection and I was prescribed with 2 kinds of anti-biotics. Still, my bloody discharge has not stopped. It has continues to run until 28 Mar 2014. However, 2 days later, the bloody discharge came again. I suspected if it was my period (according to my past cycle). It was a a bit more in the first few days and dark red in colour. Then it has become pink, orange or light brown in the following days. Up to the present moment (10 April 2014), it has not yet stopped. The bloody discharge or period (I am not sure) still with me. What's wrong with me????

Brief Answer: Do not worry. Nothing is wrong with you. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Bloody or brown discharge is NORMAL up to 5-6 months after Novasure. It is an after effect of the procedure which you have to bear till 6 months. It is not your regular periods. But i can assure you that in 90% of women it stops after that. You need to worry only if : 1) You are having greenish discharge. 2) You have fever 3)Severe worsening pelvic pain not improving with pain killers ( not the mild crampy pain) 4)Vomiting or breathlessness. 5) Your bleeding does not stop by 11 august 2014 (6 months.) If you do not have any of these then i will advice you 1) Do not worry 2) Do not keep on taking antibiotics without specific sign of infection like fever, green/yellow foul smelling discharge as they are of no use and will harm your body. 3) You can try tablet tranexamic acid under guidance of your treating doctor. It helps to control / stop bleeding. I hope I have cleared your doubts. Feel free to consult me directly http://bit.ly/drsombiswas Regards Dr. Som Biswas M.D. Mumbai

thanks for your reply. It is very horrible to hear that bloody discharge could last for up to 5 to 6 months after procedure. Any side effect for tranexamic acid for taking this medicine for a certain period of time? My doctor had prescribed this medicine to me (250mg, twice per dosage and 4 times every day) last month. Besides, I had cramping before the bloody discharge on 1.4.2014 (as I said the bloody discharge had stopped for 2 days from 28.3.2014), that's why I suspected if it was my period or not. Is it normal to have cramping? When can I tell if it should be period or still "after effect" discharge of Novasure? I am receiving physiotherapy each day for my sciatica problem, will it cause the running of blooding discharge? Thanks

Brief Answer: Do not worry Detailed Answer: Dear XXXX, Tranexamic acid has no side effects if taken for 7 -10 days. Do not take more than that. Also if you had any blood disease do not take it. Cramping will be there; that is normal. You will know its periods when you have it exactly like you used to have it before (when you had normal periods) - Red, not watery brown - for a few days - regular and stops in few days. Physiotherapy for sciatica has NO effect on your bleeding. Hope I have answered your questions. Regards
