What Causes Brownish Discoloration Of The Eyes?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: Hello, The whites of my eyes have recently turned a muddy brownish color -- not yellow. There are tiny pimple-like growths in the upper lid corners [both medial and lateral] of the left eye. My lids are stiff and my eyes are scratchy. Occasionally [1 or 2x day] I have sharp, brief pain[ like a headache pain].I am concerned about possible side effects from tegretal. Thanks! XXXXXX

Brief Answer: These symptoms indicate allergic condition. Detailed Answer: Hello Welcome to Health care magic Iam Dr. Dadapeer K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye. It seems from the history that you are being treated with tegretal for epilepsy and you are having brownish discoloration of the eyes, pimple like growths on the eye lid corners, stiff and scratchy eye lids and occasional pain. These symptoms point to allergic affection of the eyelids in the form of allergic blepharitis or allergic blepharoconjunctivitis. Tegretal is carbamazepine and is commonly used to treat epilepsy. It is not known to side effects on the eye, rarely it is known to cause cataract and conjunctivitis. The common side effects of the drug are nausea, vomiting, dizziness and jaundice characterized by yellowing of the eyes. The symptoms you have mentioned like muddy brown discoloration of conjunctiva is classically seen in allergic conjunctivitis and all other symptoms also indicate allergic blepharoconjunctivitis. Hence these are not because of side effect of tegretal but because of allergy. The treatment of the condition is by cleaning the eye lid margins and application of antibiotic or antibiotic with steroid eye ointments and use of antiallergic eye drops containing sodium cromoglycate or olopatidine. Hope I have answered your questions and the information is helpful to you. Thank you
