What Causes Bruising And Tightness In Knee After A Fall?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: I fell on the side walk from slipping in mud. I landed on my knees. This occurred in early May. My knees have been giving me a tightening feeling and I noticed that I am retaining more fluid in my legs. I also have a bruise under each knee.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understood your problem.

Have you had any knee swelling of pain before slipping and falling ?

Do you experience locking of the knee joint when you try to straighten it ?

Since you have sustained medium energy knee trauma by slipping and falling in the ground, it makes you prone to osteoarticular injuries like osteochondral fracture such can cause chronic knee pain and swelling.

If you have had any knee swelling before you slipped and fell, then it could be an ongoing disease of the joint which needs to be diagnosed and treated.

I would advise you to wear a hinged knee brace and keep your limb elevated if you are having acute pain and difficulty in bearing weight. You can do cold sponging to help in this case. Avoid flexing your knee much until you get a thorough examination and necessary investigations like Xray and if needed MRI which can diagnose Occult injuries as above. Also the fluid collection in the knees may need to be aspirated and tested for certain disorders like arthritis.

Eat a protein rich diet. Keep well hydrated. You can perform quad strengthening exercises to strengthening the muscles around your knee.

I will be available for follow up queries.

I hope I have answered your query.

Thanking you.

Dr. Aashish Raghu
